If you are wondering why food critic Chua Lam’s image seems to be plastered in lots of restaurants, maybe it’s because it’s being used without permission!
Chua and the company representing him, Charing Cross Films Production, have sued restaurant chain Guangdong Barbecue for displaying posters at the entrance with his image and name promoting their steaks, roast geese, and roast pork without his consent. The poster even has his signature on it and boasts that the restaurant’s roast meats are highly recommend by Chua.
The lawsuit has raised concerns about the rampant use of articles by food critics and photos of leaders such as Chris Patten and Donald Tsang in restaurants to promote their food. However, according to law, restaurants do not need to seek the consent of newspapers or magazines before using their articles for promotion as long as the content is relevant. But Photoshop-ing a food critic’s head and forging his signature without permission is really just going too far!
