Chinese University student fined for stealing fish

A Chinese University student, Kwan Chun-lok, was fined HK$13,300 for stealing expensive aquarium fish and then later cheating another man by refusing to give him his change.

On Sept. 2, the 26-year-old walked into Aquarium World at the goldfish market, where he slipped four thumb-sized fish — each costing HK$1,400 — into his trouser pockets. They died there and instead of fleeing the shop, Kwan bought another fish for HK$390. After the manager found the fish missing, he reviewed CCTV footage and kept a lookout for the thief.

It beats us why Kwan would choose to walk by the shop again two days later, but that’s what he did and he was promptly detained by the manager.

In a separate but earlier incident, a man met Kwan to buy two tropical fish (probably stolen too!) advertised on the internet for HK$300 and gave him a HK$1000 banknote. Kwan said that he’d get the change but never returned the money to the man. The court fined him a total of HK$13,300 for both offenses, which includes compensation for the victims.
