China thrashes other Asian nations in Hong Kong’s blind football tournament

In Hong Kong, we like to think we can beat mainland China at anything; tickle fights with our hands tied behind our backs, can-can competitions with our feet glued to the floor, and eating contests with our mouths taped up.

When it comes to football without eyesight, however, they leave us panting in their wake.

This was proven once and for all earlier this month as Hong Kong held its first ever Open Blind Football Tournament between Dec. 14 and 17 at King’s Park.

Five-a-side teams from India, Malaysia, Thailand, China and Hong Kong took part, with partially sighted athletes wearing additional blindfolds to ensure a level playing field.

China went undefeated to take the tournament, with Thailand in second place and Malaysia taking third, leaving India and Hong Kong licking their wounds.

The event was organised by Hong Kong’s Blind Sports Federation in an effort to expand sport for blind and partially sighted people across Asia.

We’ll let this one slide, but only because it’s for such a good cause!
