A flyer advertising a three-day course to teach kids how to pay New Year Calls for HK$500 has sparked the criticism of other parents, who pointed out that such things shouldn’t have to be taught in extracurricular classes and should instead be taught at home.
Launched by an educational institution for speech-training in North Point, the organiser said that this course is targeted at kindergarten children and primary school students, and teaches them how to say things like “Kung Hei Fat Choi” and other new year etiquettes, like not eating all the candy in the bowl.
Parents are not the only ones irked by the flyer — other educators have also commented that teaching children basic Chinese culture and traditions are the responsibility of parents and not educators, and such courses should not be necessary at all.
