Chai-Yan Leung defends self harm and taxpayer taunting Facebook posts

CY Leung’s famously controversial daughter Chai-Yan Leung has defended a bunch of her rather out-there social media posts in an interview with Chinese-language newspaper Metro Daily.

The article, released yesterday, sees Chai claiming she was only being sarcastic when she sparked widespread outrage for thanking the Hong Kong taxpayers for funding her expensive bags and shoes in an October Facebook post.

The comments were made at the height of Hong Kong’s Occupy Central protests that brought tens of thousands onto the streets to protest against social inequality, among other issues.

“Whenever I post a picture about my dinner, some netizens will say I am using taxpayers’ money to have good food. That’s why I made a joke about it and said ‘thank you to taxpayers for supporting my expenses on shoes’. It’s only sarcastic but people don’t have a sense of humour,” she said.

We’re glad that Chai admits she wrote it and isn’t still claiming her Facebook page was hacked, however, as she did threaten to sue Coconuts Hong Kong for breaking the story. We’ll call the lawyers off then.

Chai added that her father has taught her to “know about the real world”, and claims she was given just GBP50 (HKD606) for every three-month term while at boarding school in the UK.

“My friends and I grew up in a protected environment… After I entered the university, I realised that not everyone must have a driver or domestic helper or could afford skiing and summer trips,” explains Chai.

When questioned about another shocking Facebook post in June that included photos of what appeared to be her own slit wrist and the caption “Will I bleed to death?”, Chai just said that she was under a lot of pressure and was made to feel nervous by her father. Chai, however, denies that his role as Hong Kong’s leader is a burden to her, although she has since posted numerous dark quotes about suicide on social media.

Finally, Chai refuted claims that she contacted a modelling agency recently to request any work she could get, claiming that she was just replying to an agency that had approached her previously.

The 23-year-old, who has just finished her studies at the Department of Law in London, said she may sue the modelling agency for leaking her personal details to the press and hacking her photos.

Describing herself as “just Chai-yan”, the previously self-proclaimed “Princess Chai” said she would like to be married by 26 and have children by 30, and is just like any other young Hongkonger.
