Cathay pilots killed in Hong Kong fiery Porsche crash were ‘drifting’

Two Cathay Pacific pilots who died when the Porsche they were driving crashed into a flyover and burst into flames were purposefully “drifting”, according to police.

First officer Michael Tam Shiu-cheung, 28, and second officer Ian Wong Yick, 27, died violently in the early hours of March 13 at Container Port Road South in Kwai Chung.

The car is said to have been travelling at almost 100km/h, twice the legal speed limit, at the time.

“We believe the driver was trying to show off his driving skills, but the sports car spun out of control,” an unnamed officer told the SCMP.

The grey sports car reportedly hit the slanted edge of a flower bed, which acted as a springboard, propelling it through the air for seven metres. Its roof then hit a pillar before the vehicle crashed to the ground and burst into flames.

Wong Yick was driving, and neither of the men were found to have drugs or alcohol in their systems.

The road is known to be popular with racers who take part in “drifting”, a Fast & Furious-esque move involving high-speed skidding around corners.

Since the double fatality, police say they have cracked down on illegal road racing in the area.
