Cathay Pacific uniform ‘too revealing’, say air hostesses

Cathay Pacific air hostesses are unhappy with the uniform the Hong Kong airline forces them to wear. The main issue is the attire is too revealing and may provoke airline passengers to try and sexually harass the ladies.

The uniform has been unpopular since it was introduced in 2011, with the female cabin crew complaining that the blouse is so short that it exposes their midriff when they bend over.

Female flight attendants are not asking for a complete overhaul of the uniform but want the blouse lengthened and the skirts to be more loose fitting, according to Cathay Pacific Airways Flight Attendants Union (FAU) vice chairman Julian Yau.

A study by the southern Chinese city’s Equal Opportunities Commission in February found that 27 percent of Hong Kong attendants had been sexually harassed on flights in the past 12 months.

Harassment allegations involved “patting, touching, kissing or pinching,” or “staring in a sexual way” or as “sexual jokes and requests for sexual favours”, according to the survey.

Eighty-six percent of the 392 participants who said they were sexually harassed were female.
