If an airline has ever lost one of your bags, you’ll know how annoying it can be to have to scrabble around for essentials while awaiting its return. Just imagine how pissed off you’d be then if your bag contained HKD5 million, not that it ever would.
Cathay Pacific’s transport procedures have been questioned in LegCo after a bag containing NZD1 million (HKD5 million) was lost in a cargo transfer service provided by Hong Kong Airport Services, a wholly owned subsidiary of Cathay.
The incident occurred on Friday night when a luggage box carrying 13 cash bags was being delivered to the Bank of China. The box was transferred via trailer with no personnel present in the back to guard the cargo.
CCTV footage shows that three of the 13 bags fell out of the trailer while it was going around a corner as the wires holding them came undone.
Two bags were found on the tarmac, but the third is still missing. Police have labeled the case as theft and will continue their investigation.
Federation of Trade Unions lawmaker Wong Kwok-kin said that company should deploy staff members to monitor the transportation process when handling valuable cargo, reports The Standard.
