Cathay Pacific flight from Australia to Hong Kong ‘catches fire’ mid-air

Passengers on a flight from Perth, Australia, to Hong Kong were treated to an emergency landing in Indonesia last night after their plane reportedly caught fire mid-air.

Australian media reports that passengers heard a loud bang before seeing sparks and flames coming from the motor of the Airbus A330.

The cabin went dark and the captain announced there was a problem with an engine.

However, in a statement, Cathay later denied there was a fire onboard.

Either way, the CX170 was forced to make an emergency lading at Denpasar Indonesia, where all 251 passengers were put up overnight in hotel accommodation.

Cathay says the second engine shutdown when the incident occurred.

“Safety remains Cathay Pacific’s highest priority,” it added. “The airline is currently investigating the incident.”
