Cathay Pacific Airways’ HK$50 fare promo, yay or nay?

Who didn’t try to snap-up a Cathay Pacific Airways HK$50 tickets on Tuesday? More importantly, who managed to score one of those tickets?

Apparently loads of hopeful passengers were left disappointed as the Cathay Pacific website encountered major technical issues during the HK$50 fare promo to 11 destinations. Part of the promo included a HK$50 return fare to New York, a trip which normally costs HK$11,000.

Cathay claimed 2,000 tickets were put on sale at 8:00am and were sold out by 1:40pm but passengers report reloading the Cathay Pacific site from 7:00am only to stare at blank computer screens for hours. Even those able to get through to the website were unable to book tickets as they were met with technical errors when they tried to proceed to payment.

The Standard reports a Cathay spokeswoman apologised for the passengers’ experience, saying it was caused by “an unforeseen intermittent technical error with our reservation system which affected some customers.” She added: “We are currently investigating this with our technology supplier and in the first instance would like to apologise to all affected customers.”
