Cathay flight to Dusseldorf turns around shortly after takeoff due to ‘faulty entertainment system’

A Cathay Pacific flight from Hong Kong to Dusseldorf made an emergency landing at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) shortly after takeoff, due to an “electrical odour” being detected.

Flight CX379 took off at 12:50am with 287 people on board a Boeing 777-300ER, and landed at HKIA again at 2:21am. A spokesperson for the Airport Authority said that the airport control tower was notified of the plane turning back at 2am.

According to Oriental Daily, the flight was temporarily delayed due to suspected mechanical failure of the inflight entertainment system’s cooling system.

Of the 287 people on board the flight, 269 were passengers and 18 were crew members. Passengers were provided with hotel accommodation until the flight’s rescheduled departure, while travellers who did not have the appropriate visas to enter Hong Kong were put up in a VIP lounge at HKIA. No injuries were reported.

The flight was rescheduled to depart at 10:28am.
