It’s been a bumpy 24 hours for some folks in Hong Kong’s aviation sector.
In the first of two separate incidents yesterday, severe turbulence hit a Brisbane-bound Cathay flight, sending some airline crew reportedly hurtling into the plane’s ceiling.
The Airbus A350 hit the rocky patch about an hour after leaving Hong Kong International airport at 12:49pm, according to the SCMP.
Lasting 10 minutes, the turbulence struck as meals were being served to the flight CX157’s 264 passengers and reportedly threw some of the 11 cabin crew towards the ceiling.
The flight was diverted and made an emergency landing in Manila about 4pm local time, the airline tweeted.
Six injured cabin crew members and one injured passenger received medical checks before passengers boarded another flight for Brisbane at 6:30pm, RTHK reported.
In the other incident yesterday, a fire broke out on the tarmac at Hong Kong International Airport as workers loaded cargo into an American Airlines flight to Los Angeles, with pictures on social media showing a flaming crate at the loading door of the plane.
The blaze began at about 5:30pm and left one man injured, reported AFP.
The Hong Kong Airport Authority is investigating.
