Bye-phoon! Tropical Cyclone Meranti avoids HK, ensuring ‘hot and dry’ weather over long Mid-Autumn weekend

The Typhoon who stole Mid-Autumn is no more, y’all. The T1 warning signal was cancelled by the Hong Kong Observatory at around 4am today as Tropical Cyclone Meranti heard our pleas and got TFO, leaving us with a weekend of “hot and dry” weather and a few isolated showers.

Unfortunately, Meranti wound up hitting the southeastern Chinese city of Xiamen instead, where streets got flooded, people were evacuated, and trees fell down. It’s currently around 160 kilometres northwest of Xiamen, and is forecast to move across Fujian before weakening further.

Okay, can we just appreciate that the maximum temperature for tomorrow has increased by FOUR DEGREES since Monday? Screenshot: Hong Kong Observatory

It’s not all good news for Hong Kong either, as the Hong Kong Observatory hoisted a Yellow Fire Danger Warning at 6am, meaning that the risk of a fire is high… and apparently this is before factoring all the open-air candle-lighting that’s going to occur during Mid-Autumn festivities.
