Bus-ted: Man arrested for nicking HKD174,000 worth of luggage from airport buses

A 40-year-old Hong Kong man who was arrested for stealing luggage from an airport bus yesterday was later found to have HKD174,000 worth of stolen property in his home.

Police caught the suspect leaving a bus from the airport to the city with another person’s luggage yesterday evening, Apple Daily reports. Somebody should tell him that taking the bus generally isn’t a goodie bag kind of affair.

After arresting the man, surnamed Ying, police conducted a search of his home in Mong Kok and found stolen property, like clothes and diving equipment, estimated to be worth a total of HKD174,000.

Ying is believed to be connected to 14 cases of stolen luggage from airport buses. Hong Kong Island crime squad inspector Justin Siu told the SCMP that numerous cases of such thefts had been reported between January and October, and that they “mostly happened on buses leaving from the airport [to the city].”

On Tuesday, police arrested another man, aged 60, who had allegedly stolen two pieces of luggage containing HKD40,000 worth of property between January and July of this year.
