Police have arrested the driver of a double decker bus that hit a woman and ran over her leg as she waited on a busy road in Mong Kok.

Apple Daily reports that the 19-year-old female student surnamed Huang from Guangzhou was in Hong Kong for a day trip with friends. At around 4pm yesterday, Huang – who was wheeling a suitcase – and two of her friends were crossing the road at the junction between Argyle Street and Nathan Road.

The newspaper reported that as soon as Huang reached the sidewalk, the green light came on for cars turning into Argyle Street from Nathan Road.

At this point, an A21 bus that runs from Hung Hom to the airport turned into Argyle Street, driving too close to the railings on the sidewalk, and ran over Huang’s right leg, breaking it.

Online outlet on.cc reported that passers-by rushed to aid and comfort Huang as she yelled “it hurts”. In video posted by on.cc, you can also hear a woman screaming “what do we do?”

Huang was sent to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, and police arrested the 47-year-old driver for dangerous driving.

On.cc reported that the driver was released on bail and would have to report back to the police in December.

According to the Transport Department, the junction between Nathan Road and Argyle Street was listed as a “black site” in 2010, meaning that within 12 months it had either seen  more than six traffic accidents involving pedestrian injuries or at least nine traffic accidents resulting in personal injuries.

It was also featured in a Transport Department list detailing the number of traffic accidents at black site locations between 2005 and 2007. According to this list, there were a total of 64 accidents and 88 casualties on the same junction between 2005 to 2007.

Which leaves the question: What’s being done about it?
