The bus driver who was behind the wheel of a double-decker that crushed the leg of a woman waiting at a busy junction was today sentenced to 11 months in jail.

Liu Kam-wan, 48, pleaded guilty to one count of dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm in December.

He returned to District Court today, where a judge, in addition to the jail term, also suspended his driver’s license for two years, HK01 reports.

The incident in question happened when Liu was driving the A21 bus along Nathan Road in Mong Kok in November last year.

As he turned into Argyle Street, his bus hit Huang Xiaoyi, who was standing outside the railings on the street, and had just reached the sidewalk. Liu’s bus ran over Huang’s right leg, breaking it.

Huang, a student from Guangzhou, was rushed to hospital and had to have her right foot amputated.

The court heard today that Huang, now 20, has a prosthetic foot, but can only walk unaided by crutches for about 10 minutes before it becomes too painful for her to go any further.

The judge noted that there were four lanes on Argyle Street, giving the bus plenty of space to maneuver.

He added that although Huang was outside the railing at the time, Liu was still too close to the sidewalk and did not ensure pedestrian safety when he turned into Argyle Street at the time.

The judge originally sentenced Liu to one year in jail, but said he was willing to reduce the sentence by one month after the court heard in mitigation that Liu often donates to charity and occasionally does volunteer work.
