Burst pipes flood swathes of Kwai Chung, blocking roads for 6 hours

The bursting of two different water mains this morning caused caused massive disruptions to people passing through Kwai Chung for about six hours.

A 250 millimetre freshwater main and 200 millimetre salt water main under Kwai Chung Plaza burst at around 6am, the Water Services Department (WSD) told HK01.

Hey, at least it wasn’t pure, raw sewage. Then we’d be up shit creek.

Police officers arrived to close off the affected areas on Kwai Yan Road and Kwai Fuk Road as WSD staff worked to stem the flow.

Traffic around the area was severely congested during rush hour as bus and minibus routes had to be diverted.

Ming Pao reports that the water was roughly one foot deep. Netizens likened the flooded roads to the Yellow River in western China, with one person humorously remarking that they would need to get to work by dinghy.

The water began subsiding by 8am, and was gone at around noon. According to the WSD, the freshwater supply should have returned at roughly 6pm.
