Bugged Out: Maxim’s fined twice in a week for insects in food

If you haven’t already figured out that you shouldn’t eat stuff made by Maxim’s Group, this might just give you the shove into reality you so desperately need.

This week, Maxim’s has been fined TWICE for having insects in its food.

On Monday, the group was told to cough up HKD8,000 after a customer found a dead cockroach in a plate of Sichuan-style shrimp balls at the Jade Garden restaurant in Tsim Sha Tsui.

And then yesterday, they were ordered to pay another HKD5,000 after a schoolgirl found a dead fly in a pre-wrapped “Snowy Bun with Chocolate”.

The brand’s defence lawyers at first tried to deny the second claim, insisting the girl must have confused the bun with others purchased elsewhere by her mother on the same day.

However, according to EJI, the little star shot down the claims by showing how she always wraps her Snowy Buns separately because they’re her favourite.

Proving that kids have no fear, she also admitted she’s been back to the Long Ping West Rail Station shop and bought and eaten more of the buns since, although she did say she’s been more cautious.

In April, Maxim’s was fined when a woman discovered two cockroaches in her lunchbox; in March, Maxim’s was fined after a customer found a plastic glove in her bread; and last year, Maxim’s admitted it had used not-fit-for-human-consumption “gutter oil” in its pineapple buns.
