On Monday night at the Sha Tau Kok Control Point, the police intercepted a 36-year-old man trying to bicycle across the border with 162 caged live birds: 91 yellow-breasted buntings, 47 Siberian 14 white-tailed robins, and 10 silver-eared mesias (shown above), which are endangered. Disappointingly, he was not also carrying a partridge in a pear tree.
The birds lacked valid health certification, required by law to ensure that bird flu does not slip across our borders. They were seized by the Animal Management Centre by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department after sample were taken to be tested for bird flu. It is unknown what will happen to the birds.
