Let’s go and see the falling stars, La!

The Geminid meteor shower, said to be one of the most spectacular in the night sky, is coming tonight according to the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO).

How spectacular is this meteor shower? Well, depends where you watch it.

While the HKO and the Hong Kong Space Museum, say viewers could expect to see as many as 120 meteors per hour. Light population in urban areas could reduce that drastically.

The best meteor shower-watching time, according to the weather service, will be around 8:30pm tonight. The best viewing spots are Shek O, Sai Kung and Plover Cove Reservoir, on.cc reports.

But people have been reminded not to get their hopes up too much.

The University of Hong Kong’s (HKU) physics department said that due to light pollution problems in Hong Kong, the number of stars visible to the naked eye will be 10 to 15 in suburban areas, and not the 120 like some suggest.

Instead of the prime viewing time of 8:30pm, HKU says that the best time watch is 1:30am tomorrow.

But wherever you decide to watch the Geminid meteor shower, Hong Kong Space Museum’s Assistant curator Patrick Lau Kai-Ip reminded the public to pay attention to the weather, pick a spot that isn’t too cloudy and polluted, and remember not to litter.
