Good news for pollution haters – so everyone in Hong Kong. Wong Kam-sing, the Secretary for the Environment, has announced new emissions controls set to be levied against petrol and LPG vehicles from next month.
In the government’s ongoing bid to improve air quality in Hong Kong (you’ve got a long way to go, guys!), remote sensing equipment will be placed at roadside locations around the territory to single out vehicles expelling excessive amounts of pollutants.
Those found in violation will need to subject their runaround to a dynamometer-based emissions test, and licences will be revoked if requirements are not met.
The move comes after a HKD150 million government subsidy programme to have oxygen sensors and catalytic converts replaced for free on taxis and light buses ended in April.
Wong told the the Vehicle Emissions Reduction Summer Carnival 2014 earlier this month that 80 percent of eligible vehicles had taken up the scheme.
