University of Hong Kong researchers may have developed the first ever vaccine that can protect against many influenza viruses — including the deadly H7N9 bird flu strain.
This is a breakthrough development as most vaccines can only protect against one or a few specific viral subtypes, but this new vaccine offers a broader spectrum of protection against different subtypes.
The new vaccine helped 80 to 100 percent of mice fight different strains of flu viruses; however, it may take years before the vaccine is tested in human clinical trials.
