Hong Kong legislator Leung Kwok-hung, along with eight members of local political groups League of Social Democrats and People Power, were denied entry to Macau today as Chinese premier Li Keqiang arrives in the territory for a three-day visit.
Leung, popularly known as “Longhair”, along with high-profile activists such as former lawmaker “The Bull” Tsang Kin-shing and radio host “Fast Beat” Tam Tak-chi, arrived in Macau by ferry from Hong Kong this afternoon and were surrounded by the authorities upon arrival, according to a statement released on the League of Social Democrats’ Facebook page.
Activist Lui Yuk-lin was said to have had her handbag “snatched by a female police officer” when she started scattering “hell money” around, the statement said.
The activists planned their trip to Macau to stage protests against a variety of political issues while Li Keqiang is in town, according to local media. They were pictured with banners at the Hong Kong–Macau Ferry Terminal in Sheung Wan shortly before their departure.
As of press time, posts from the page, as well as Leung’s own Facebook profile, state that the group is currently being detained.
