A 30-year-old Pakistani man was charged yesterday with murdering his girlfriend, whose body was found wrapped in a mattress on the sidewalk of Changsha Street in Mong Kok on Monday, reports Apple Daily.
The man, whose name is reported be Wahaj Fyaz, allegedly took methamphetamines on the day of the murder. Police investigators suspect that Fyaz began physically abusing his girlfriend, Wiji Astutik Supardi, while he was under the influence, according to the newspaper.
Another male, identified to be of Indian descent, was arrested yesterday for allegedly acting as an accomplice in helping Fyaz escape arrest.
Supardi, who reportedly came to Hong Kong in 2007 seeking refugee status, was found wrapped in a mattress on the sidewalk of Changsha Street on Monday with several bruises, none of which were fatal. She had apparently been living with Fyaz before her body was found.
Police investigators claim that Fyaz has had a history of domestic violence. In February, police reported that Supardi was assaulted by Fyaz, but didn’t press charges.
The trial for the murder began yesterday morning. Supardi’s sister, a domestic helper in Taiwan, has yet to make plans to come to Hong Kong due to her work.
