Bored Hongkongers went to the movies a lot during Chinese New Year, box office up 21%

Box office sales over the Chinese New Year holidays from Feb. 18 – 21 increased by 21 percent compared to the same period last year, resulting in whopping total revenue of HKD62.1 million.

The 3D Japanese animated movie “Doraemon: Stand By Me” headed the charts, perhaps bolstered by Hongkongers’ nostalgia following the recent sad news of the passing of Doraemon’s Cantonese voice actor.

“Triumph in the Skies”, a spin-off from a TVB series, was number two over the holidays, reports Variety.

Coming in at number three in the charts was “From Vegas to Macau II”, a 3D movie starring Chow Yun-fat that’s the sequel to last year’s “The Man from Macau”.

In fourth place was “12 Golden Ducks”, a comedy about male prostitution that follows the three popular “Golden Chicken” movies, about female prostitutes.
