A fake university selling diplomas for HKD125 and bachelor’s degrees for HKD1,250 has been taken offline in Hong Kong.
The bogus “Suwen University of Hong Kong” was selling its courses on taobao.com, China’s biggest online marketplace, despite not being registered as an educational institution in Hong Kong, and despite not actually existing.
The scammers’ web designers undertook some pretty audacious Photoshopping liberties, slapping the name and logo of the universifake onto local landmarks, including Harbour City and the IFC, to give the illusion of a well plush campus.
They even used a photo of the president of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and his students as the site banner.
According to the SCMP, the real uni confirmed it has nothing to do with the bogus business when it was alerted to the use of the photo, and said it might pursue legal proceedings.
