A knife attack at Jordan MTR on Monday was sparked by a dispute about cannabis sales between two rival triad fractions, according to police.
The attack of at least eight men on three is thought to have occurred between two fractions of the Wo Shing Wo triad society, one of which is active in Yuen Long and the other of which works in Jordan and Yau Ma Tei.
Six asylum seekers from India, who are thought to be part of the Yuen Long gang, reportedly went shopping for iPhones in Jordan on Monday evening when they were spotted by the rival Yau Ma Tei faction.
As the six Indian men waited on the busy MTR platform during rush hour, eight members of the rival group – made up of men of Pakistani, Indian and Nepalese origin – arrived.
“The Yau Ma Tei gang got off the train and attacked the six with beef knives before running out of the station,” a source told the SCMP.
Three of the Indian men were seriously injured and are currently recovering in Queen Mary Hospital.
Police says they have stepped up raids and surveillance on triad gangs, which are seemingly recruiting among South Asian asylum seekers.
“The raids will continue over the weekend,” a source said. “It is to deliver a message to them [the triads] that police are monitoring them and action will be taken if they cause further trouble.”
