Canal Road West flyover, Causeway Bay
Ill will was rampant in Causeway Bay yesterday as “devil-beaters” dealt out serious beatings to enemies on the Feast of Excited Insects, traditionally the best time to curse your enemy or enemies.
These old ladies, who set up their tools of the trades under the Canal Road West flyover, did a brisk business as people queued to rid themselves of bad luck or wish bad luck on others, and watched devil-beaters pound at paper effigies with the soles of their shoes.
Some people waiting in line even openly admitted that they were wishing ill will on very specific people — like their boss. We don’t know if it works, but at least it seems satisfying to watch!
