Bargain trips to lure Hongkongers to Thailand

With the Hong Kong government’s red travel alert warning and with the Thai military curfew still in force in tourist hot spots like Chiang Mai and Bangkok, travel agencies and the Thai tourism department have been trying to lure Hongkongers to vacation in Thailand over the summer with bargain trips.

The Standard found a roundtrip air ticket and two-night stay at a three-star hotel to cost less than HK$1,200 and five-day tour to Bangkok and Pattaya for just HK$1,399.

Hong Thai travel agency claims that holidaymakers planning trips to Thailand are still low, with tourists reduced by 70-80 percent since the red alert and martial law declared.

The Thai Tourism department has also offered discount vouchers and special offers at attractions to attract holidaymakers and admitted that Hong Kong visitors dropped from 200,000 to 120,000 in the first four months this year.
