In what is perhaps the least elaborate smuggling attempt we’ve heard of in recent months, Hong Kong Customs officers arrested a man yesterday for attempting to smuggle a stash of smartphones in the boot of his car.
The 29-year-old man was apprehended while attempting to leave Hong Kong via Lok Ma Chau Control Point, and was promptly — because of his aforementioned lack of zany concealment tactics — discovered to have 891 smartphones from various brands in his car.
The smartphones were reported to be worth a total of around HKD2.2 million, which rather ironically is about the same as the maximum fine for exporting unmanifested cargo (a cool HKD2 million, give or take seven years imprisonment, in case you’re wondering).
There’s no word on whether the unimaginative smuggler has been released on bail, but we would like to refer him to some other, more ingenious tactics for future reference.
