Another public hospital blunder, baby dies right before birth

After 10 months of pregnancy, a young 18-year-old mother was devastated to find her dreams of motherhood shattered when her newborn suddenly died in her womb during labour, which she blames medical negligence.

The mother, surnamed Chen, was due to give birth on New Year’s Day, and was admitted to the hospital on the Jan. 10 into Queen Mary Hospital. She had gone to the hospital eight days earlier after experiencing contractions but was turned away because the nurses claimed that she was not ready to give birth yet. The family lamented that if medical staff had induced labour, the baby might still be alive.

On the afternoon of the 10th, the foetus was detected to have a heart beat but at 8:30pm, the foetus suddenly stopped exhibiting signs of life. The doctor declined to operate to retrieve the foetus since he said that there was a risk of blood loss.

Chen then went into a painful 12-hour labour, only to birth a seven-pound dead baby. The young mother had prepared many newborn clothes and purchased parenting books in anticipation of the baby girl’s arrival.
