Another blotched dental job: Dentist injured patient’s tongue

As if dental procedures, with its whirling drills and sharp implements, are not nerve-wracking enough, now you have to worry about stories that pop up in the media from time to time about dentists screwing up the job.

A female patient suspected that a dentist injured nerves in her tongue while removing her wisdom teeth, causing the left side of her tongue to lose 30 percent of its taste receptors. After filing a complaint with the dental council, the doctor, surnamed Chan, pleaded guilty to six counts of professional misconduct, including not referring the patient to a specialist to treat her injury.
