An anonymous (and very generous) Hong Kong businessman has donated USD1 million (HKD 7.8 million) to the families of two New York police officers shot dead in apparent retaliation for a string of police killings of unarmed black men.
The donor, described only as a “wealthy entrepreneur”, gave USD500,000 to an education fund for Officer Rafael Ramos’ children, and the other USD500,000 to the father of Officer Wenjian Liu.
The two policemen were shot dead in their patrol car on Dec. 20 in a brutal retaliation to a hot topic issue that has shaken the United States since the shooting of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown in August last year.
The gunman claimed to be acting in response to perceived police aggression towards African Americans.
Liu’s father, Wei Tang Liu, immigrated to the US from China when Liu, his only son, was just a boy.
On receiving the cheque in New York this week, he thanked the unknown donor in Cantonese.
