Animal welfare volunteers praised for protecting strays with makeshift shelters

While the recent cold snap has seen hundreds, if not thousands, of Hongkongers venturing into the great outdoors to revel in its wintry beauty, animal welfare activists have been trekking out in the cold for a completely different reason – to ensure the safety and wellbeing of stray dogs and cats.

This photo, which was shared by Sai Kung dog shelter Catherine’s Puppies, shows a series of makeshift dog- and cat-houses set up to protect strays from the inclement weather:

While we are unsure about the origin of the post, one netizen commented that the shelters were built by local volunteers, who had recently discovered that layering foil underneath towels for bedding was an effective way to conserve warmth in the makeshift houses.

The boxes, which appear to be styrofoam, are held in place on either side by filled water bottles, so as to prevent them blowing away in strong winds. The photo also appears to show meat or food of some kind for the strays.

We know it’s chilly out there, but our hearts feel toasty right now!
