Customs officials arrested a woman, 25, at the Hong Kong airport yesterday after they found 2.3 kilogrammes of suspected cocaine hidden in two backpacks.
The drugs, worth about HKD2.2 million on the market, were discovered when officials X-rayed “abnormally heavy” empty backpacks amongst her belongings. The cocaine was concealed in a false compartment.
The woman, who arrived from South Africa and claimed to be a salesperson (which sounds true enough), will be charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug.
She will appear at the Tsuen Wan Magistrates’ Courts today.
On Wednesday a 57-year-old woman was arrested after customs found 3.8 kilogrammes of suspected cocaine in seven books she was carrying.
In response to the two cases, Customs said that they will “continue to keep track of the latest drug trafficking trend and formulate pertinent anti-narcotics enforcement strategies”.
Apparently the “latest drug trafficking trend” is to hide large, heavy quantities of cocaine in things that aren’t supposed to be heavy at all…
Drug trafficking can be punished by life imprisonment and a fine of $5 million.
