Police have arrested an airport cop on suspicion of stealing a wallet containing HK$50,000 (about US$6,370).

According to Apple Daily, the wallet in question was found by a flight attendant on Wednesday at 10pm. Inside the wallet was the cash, and owner’s phone number.

After handing the wallet to the police report center by the airport’s departures gate, she called the number and informed the owner of where she had left it.

At around 11:15 that night, the wallet’s owner went to the police report center to claim their wallet, only to hear from the on-duty officer that there was no record of the wallet ever being handed in.

On.cc reports that after a preliminary investigation, police arrested a 26-year-old male officer surnamed Fung for improperly handling property at about 2:50am yesterday.

Fung has been released on bail and must report back to police at the end of this month.

This is the second case in recent weeks of a police officer allegedly abusing the dictum of “finders keepers.” A cop was found guilty of theft late last month for taking HK$8,000 forgotten by the person using the ATM next to his.

The officer claimed in court that he had made a good faith effort to notify the bank, and believed that the money might have been his, but a judge found the excuse “extremely unreasonable.”
