Actress and her district councillor husband announce pregnancy with music video

In the age of social media, announcements for big milestone events like pregnancies have been taken to the next level.

And while the US has Beyoncé — whose pregnancy announcing pic became Instagram’s photo of 2017 — a Hong Kong celebrity and her politician husband, we think, have raised the bar.

Rather than just say “we’re having a fourth child”, actress and singer Nicola Cheung Young and her spouse,  Liberal party district councillor Jeremy Young, decided instead to create an entire music video staring their family to reveal the surprise.

Cheung — whose notable film credits include the 1998 Hong Kong romantic drama City of Glass — posted the video on her Facebook yesterday.

It begins with a mock press conference apologizing to people for any misunderstanding over the last three months. Misunderstanding being “not giving you face at a party by accepting drinks from you”.

And then the music kicks in with the first slide: “Accidental 2018 pregnant woman”.

“We said three was enough, but even my husband was fooled,” Cheung Young sings.

“My back is going to hurt, every day I am going to throw up, and every day I am going to put on weight to become a pregnant wife.”

While perhaps not rising to the level of poetry, Cheung’s lyrics are surely familiar to growing families (the pair already have three daughters).

She notes family trips will soon require two taxis, holidays will become scarce and homework plentiful.

The backing track is actually from one of Cheung Young’s original hits in the early 2000s called Accidentally, which you can listen to here.

The video has been viewed more than 36,000 times, prompting well wishes from netizens and praise for the couple’s creativity.

Cheung Young told Apple Daily that she never thought about having a fourth child, and that raising three children was already quite tough but added that the family are very excited about the new arrival.

She said she doesn’t know the gender of the baby yet, or rather as she sings in her song:

“I don’t know if it’s a boy or a girl, just don’t know, don’t know, don’t care.”
