Police have arrested a 36-year-old Hong Kong man for allegedly nearly severing the ear of his girlfriend’s ex because he suspected the other man was trying to steal her away from him.
Officers were called to the Ping Tin housing estate in Lam Tin, an area within the Kwun Tong district, at about 2:40am on Tuesday morning, and arrested a 36-year-old man surnamed Hau on suspicion of wounding.
Hau lived in one of the tower blocks on the estate with his 32-year-old girlfriend, surnamed Choi, and her young daughter from a previous relationship with another 36-year-old man, surnamed Ma.
According to HK01, the trio were childhood friends and all lived in the same housing estate.
After Ma and Choi broke up, Choi began seeing Hau, and she and her daughter moved in with him. Ma would often stop by to see his daughter.
Hau reportedly didn’t find out about these regular visits until recently, and was convinced that the purpose of Ma’s visits was to win back Choi.
Things came to a head on Tuesday morning when Hau waited by a garbage station outside the tower block to stop Ma from visiting his daughter. A fight broke out, and Hau allegedly pulled out a knife and almost completely cut off Ma’s ear before running back to his apartment.
When paramedics arrived at the scene shortly afterwards, they found Ma with a three-centimeter gash to his ear, which was barely attached.
Apple Daily reports that Ma was rushed to United Christian Hospital for surgery.
Police equipped with shields arrived at the scene at the same time as the paramedics and apprehended Hau.
Police told Coconuts Hong Kong today that it was Choi’s brother who called police to the scene, and that the case is being investigated by the Criminal Investigation Team of the Kwun Tong District. As of press time, no formal charges had been filed.
