9 arrested for karaoke systems featuring pirated music and movies

During a customs raid in Kowloon, nine people (three of which are women) were arrested for the sale or use of karaoke systems featuring pirated music and movies.

Police raided a technology company in Sham Shui Po and five pubs in Kowloon, seizing 49 sets of karaoke systems – all of which contained songs and films suspected of infringing copyright.

Police believe the technology company had tailor-made the systems for the pubs and had offered regular checks, downloaded music and movies for the clients for a monthly fee.

According to the Copyright Ordinance, the use by companies or karaokes of copyright infringing computer programs, movies, TV dramas, musical recordings is a criminal offence and the maximum penalty is four years in jail and a fine of HK$50,000 per pirated copy!
