8 out of 10 arrested during anti-parallel-trading protest walk free without charges

Prosecutors have dropped charges against eight of the 10 people arrested for during February’s anti parallel trade protests in Tuen Mun.

All eight were arrested on Feb. 8 for unlawful assembly during a protest at the Trend Plaza and the Tuen Mun Town Plaza.

Yesterday, however, prosecutors decided to drop the accusations after further enquiries showed the charges were not likely to lead to convictions.

Chan Yau-tak, a Tuen Mun resident and one of the eight released, said that the incident was a waste of his time and taxpayers’ dollars.

“It makes perfect sense for someone like me who lives in Tuen Mun to appear at a shopping arcade that was not declared a restricted area by the police,” he said, according to Apple Daily.

Chan conveniently did not mention if he was there for the protest.

The remaining two of the 10 arrested are still in custody.

The 22-year-old and 16-year-old are due to appear in court on June 22 and June 25 on charges of assaulting a police officer and obstructing a police officer, respectively.
