76-year-old Hong Kong woman makes headlines in Scotland over death-defying window cleaning technique

One Hong Kong granny’s got Glaswegians worked into a lather after she was pictured cleaning the windows of her fifth-floor flat in the Scottish city… while standing on the outside ledge with nary a safety precaution in sight.

Satellite technician Kieran Turner snapped a woman’s death-defying cleaning technique while working last week and uploaded photos of the surreal sight to Facebook under the caption, “Window cleaning Glasgow style”.

After the photos made the rounds of Scottish social media and news outlets, the fearless window-washer was soon identified by the Daily Record as 76-year-old Mo Kam-tai, who emigrated from Hong Kong 25 years ago.

Mo told the paper that she survived the Japanese invasion in 1941, does Tai Chi every morning, and regularly washes the windows in this fashion against her family’s wishes… despite being locked out on the ledge once. So just your regular hard-as-nails Hong Kong po po then.

Despite Mo’s blasé attitude, it bears emphasising that she’s doing this of her own volition outside a fifth-floor apartment. The same cannot be said of the countless domestic helpers here in Hong Kong who are told to perform similar feats by their employers, often stretching out of much higher residences.
