A briefcase weighing 70kg – mainly due to its contents of HKD23 million in gold bars! – has gone missing from a flat in Tseung Kwan O, Sai Kung.
The gold was picked up by a 52-year-old employee of a Hong Kong gold dealer at Kai Chung container terminal on Sept. 21, a source close to the investigation told the SCMP.
After packing the gold into a briefcase in true gangster fashion, the man then took it to a flat in Phase Two of The Wings in Tseung Kwan O. The apartment is reportedly used as staff quarters for both the Hong Kong gold dealer and a Taiwanese company.
The 52-year-old reportedly told police the gold was still there when he last checked on Saturday.
Apparently HKD23 million in gold bars doesn’t warrant a daily check. It was the Mid-Autumn Festival after all.
Three employees of the Taiwanese company – two women and a man, all aged between 30 and 50 – who were seen leaving the building with luggage on Sunday and Monday are now being sought by police.
According to Taiwanese media, four members of the Taiwanese company’s management have previously been arrested for alleged gold investment fraud that saw 5,000 investors lose a combined HKD232.8 million.
