600 attend vigil for dogs living in Hong Kong public housing, according to organisers

Yesterday evening, local organization Dog Rights Concern Group held a candelight vigil for dogs living in public housing in front of the Legislative Council Complex in Admiralty.

The group estimates that more than 600 people – all wearing black – attended the vigil, which was held from 6pm to 8pm.

The gathering aimed to urge the government to reconsider its policies on keeping dogs in public housing.

According to Dog Rights Concern Group, there are more than 10,000 dogs living in public housing that risk being abandoned by their owners due to government regulations about pets inside the subsidised apartment complexes.

“We believe that [the] proper education of […] dog owners is a way more practical alternative to [a] total [ban],” wrote the group.

The group also aimed to “educate dog owners” so that they act responsibly and “avoid causing nuisance to their neighbors and the environment”.

Civi Party lawmaker Claudio Mo attended the event, and moved the audience to tears with her emotional pleas for the dogs, according to organisers.

Also in attendance were representatives from the Wild Boar Concern Group, the Civic Party Animal Rights Concern Group, Animal Earth, and other local animal organisations.
