51,000 ‘triad members’ arrested in Hong Kong, Macau and Guangdong crackdown

More than 51,000 people thought to have links to triad gangs have been arrested across Hong Kong, Macau and Guangdong, police announced yesterday.

As many as 4,323 – 1,177 of which are from mainland China – were detained in Hong Kong after raids on 7,500 locations across a three-month period.

During the annual crackdown, codenamed “Thunderbolt”, HKD102 million in cash and HKD67 million in contraband, including drugs, weapons, pirated media and illicit cigarettes were seized locally.

An additional 11,000 people were arrested in Guangdong, and a further 4,000 in Macau.

The remaining numbers are made up by as many as 31,000 people described as “drug addicts” who were also taken into custody.

Those arrested are said to be mainly triad members, some of whom are believed to be high ranking.
