500lb wartime bomb found at construction site near HKU

Residents of Pokfulam Road have been evacuated after 500-pound wartime bomb was discovered on a nearby construction site.

At around 10am, workers at a construction site on 138 Pokfulam Road found a suspected wartime bomb whilst carrying out foundation work and called the police, Apple Daily reports.

Officers from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Division and firefighters rushed to the scene to investigate the situation. Sources at the scene told reporters that the bomb weighed roughly 500 pounds.

According to Pok Fu Lam District Councillor Paul Zimmerman, the bomb disposal unit is preparing for an on-site detonation, during which Pok Fu Lam Road will be closed.

Around 30 workers were evacuated from the area. Residents living in Block 3 of the neighbouring Middleton Tower, a HKU-owned property, have also been evacuated from their homes. They will be taken to Lei Tung Estate in Ap Lei Chau for the time being.

The construction site where the bomb was found is being developed into three six-storey luxury flats by Ryoden Development.
