50,000 sign petition in support of Uber Hong Kong

As responsible, informed citizens, we must use our voices for the greater good, speaking up for the underprivileged and standing up for what is right.

Over 53,000 noble people have signed Uber’s petition supporting their services in Hong Kong. The car-hire company is the world’s most highly capitalised startup with a proposed valuation of USD50 billion (HKD388 billion).

But Uber’s run into a bit of trouble lately, if you haven’t heard: the Hong Kong police arrested five Uber drivers, then raided their office and detained two interns.

(Poor interns… Hopefully a police detainment will guarantee a full-time job offer, at least.)

Uber says it is “glad to report that they have all been released and are safe at home”.

The authorities accused the Uber drivers of illegally driving cars for rental purposes and operating without third-party insurance.

“Around the world, Uber is working with governments to achieve a common goal that creates safe, reliable, and efficient transportation options supported by reasonable, consumer-friendly regulations,” wrote Uber on the petition’s website.

“We look forward to meeting with the Transport and Housing Bureau, other government bodies, and legislators to discuss how we can work together to encourage innovation and create a better Hong Kong for residents, tourists, and business travelers.”

The company also praised their fans, describing the “UberLove” they’ve received as “tremendous”.
