500 people line up for hours to grab spot in government parking lot

If shopping weren’t Hong Kong’s national sport, then queuing might be a close contender.

With more and more car owners, and less and less space to park, people are pretty desperate for an affordable lot for their vehicles.

In Tsuen Wan, where car parks are scarce and many open lots are being sold for new developments, parking space rent can reach HKD4,300 a month, with even uncovered parking lots charging more than HK2,000, reports Apple Daily.

So every 23rd of the month, when the government takes applications for their subsidised parking lot in Tsuen Wan, people will do whatever they can to grab a spot.

The Tsuen Wan Multi-Storey Carpark Building is conveniently situated right next to the MTR station and charges a mere HKD1,800 a month.

So on Monday, about 500 people stood in line to grab a spot, with some waiting up to eight hours before the offices opened at 7:30am.

Only a year ago, no one would have to wait in line, said one car owner. But with every passing month, the lines got longer and longer, and people started arriving earlier and earlier.

Some even got their poor mums to stand in line for them, while other absent mums complained that those who have to take care of children don’t stand a chance.
