Four kittens were discovered on a cargo plane that arrived in Hong Kong from Singapore Saturday night.

A Singapore Airlines employee notified police that the cats—two black and two white kittens—were found in the cabin of the plane, which arrived earlier that day.

The kittens were transferred to the care of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD), which is arranging for them to be quarantined in accordance with the rabies risk assessment requirements, according to the Standard. The cats are in good health, AFCD said.

Coconuts has reached out to the AFCD for comment.

It is unclear how the kittens ended up on the Hong Kong-bound plane. The AFCD said the kittens will be put up for adoption after finishing quarantine.

Over the weekend, a Facebook feline concern group appealed to netizens to write to the AFCD and urge the department not to put down the four kittens.

In 2019, a stray dog that boarded a cargo ship in Thailand and arrived in Hong Kong was euthanized by AFCD officers the same day. At the time, the department said the dog did not have a microchip implant used for tracking a lost pet, and that Thailand is a high-risk region for rabies.

The incident sparked backlash from animal welfare groups. The AFCD released a conciliatory statement in the weeks after, clarifying that the department would “seriously review the procedure and methods to deal with overseas animals that are lost and have come to Hong Kong.”
