Four Hong Kong nationals have been arrested after Western Australia’s biggest ever drugs haul, with 316 kilograms of meth found inside Chinese tea packets.
The case was cracked to Tuesday when an 18-year-old Hongkonger was pulled over in his car in southern Perth by organised crime squad detectives.
After searching a house nearby, the cops found 316 kilograms of methamphetamine split up and wrapped in Chinese tea packets and packed into 10 suitcases and a sports bag.
The teen and another 19-year-old man were charged with possession of both the drugs and a substantial amount of cash.
The search then continued to another apartment and a hotel room in Perth’s Central Business District, where more money and another five kilograms of meth were uncovered.
A 26-year-old man and a 21-year-old man were charged at the scene.
“We’re very proud to have taken this off the streets but the significant amount of it can only be described as frightening,” WA police acting deputy commissioner Michelle Fyfe said, according to news.com.au.
Three of the arrested men were reportedly in the country unlawfully, while one was on a visitor visa.
Police say the drugs seized are worth AUD321 million (HKD1.7 billion), while AUD1.4 million (HKD7.6 million) was recovered in cash.
