Three people were killed while 29 others were injured after a double decker bus drove through the busy intersection of Yen Chow Street and Cheung Sha Wan Road in Sham Shui Po on Friday night.

According to a report from the South China Morning Post, the accident happened at 6:30pm after the Citybus swerved to avoid a taxi “which suddenly slowed down” ahead of the route E21A bus bound for Oi Man Estate.

One woman was declared dead on the spot, while two men lost their lives after being rushed to a nearby hospital. The pavement near the accident site was littered with injured people receiving first aid.

The injured received swift medical attention while the unnamed and unhurt bus driver was arrested.

Meanwhile, Citybus acting chief executive Matthew Cheung Kin-chung went to the hospital to inform the injured people that they’ll be providing “full assistance and support for the victims.” Another Citybus spokesman told SCMP that they will also be providing assistance for the deceased.

The report called the incident as “one of the worst” road accidents in Hong Kong’s recent history.
